I've had sharp pains in my jaw for about a month. First it was the right side and now the left hurt

Both my father and grandmother have TMJ so I thought it might be the onset of that, but I don't seem to have any other symptoms.  It doesn't seem to be tooth related, but I could be wrong about that.  Aleve seems to get rid of the pain most of the time, but a couple of times the pain has been excruciating even with the pain reliever.
