Q: Need some advice about symptoms from back injury

I swear I posted this already but I cant seem to find it so Ill try it again. OK quick background I ruptured L5-S1 on july 18th 2007, had laminectomy to fix that. The surgery was a success, until about a month and a half later when I reherniated the same disc. No idea how it happened that time lol, then had the same surgery on april 15th 2008. Still have severe pain in back and nerve pain in left leg and foot. Had an mri that shows "persistent moderate bulge and bilateral foraminal reduction of moderate degree" there is also moderate decreased height at that disc. OK now the new problem..... 6 days ago I took a header into the living room floor lol. I tripped over the botton of my lounge pants and fell face forward, my legs were twisted to the right and I didnt catch myself in any way. A couple hours after the fall my foot and ankle started to swell. I didnt hit my legs or feet on anything or injure them at all. The swelling has continued to worsen. Its worse on my left leg from a little above me knee to my toes. My right leg is not quite as swollen. The swelling is large and is tender to the touch. A Dr. at  a walk in clinic told me it was because the nerves at that level of your back control the flow of blood into your legs and they are not functioning properly. Has anyone heard of this? I would appreciate any advice or infomation. thank you and sorry for the long post :)
