Saturday, October 04, 2008 Jo asks

Q: This is Jo again.I don't think I made myself clear. And would like to clarify

First thanks so much for your opinion. The oral surgeon I chose to go to has a good reputation. But I have been told that if I had an infection after 6 weeks my oral surgeon should have done a culture to check and see what it might be.I begged him to do so for over a year.He kept saying things like well I have been through this kind of thing before and a patient wanted his implants removed and he still had infection. So I think he was trying to make me believe that my sinuses were the culprit. Not the implants. But if you taste puss in your mouth for over a year,Are unable to eat food that is healthy because you basically must gum any food you can. This is not healthy.I could not use the dentures. To put them on caused terrible pain. This is my question.Shouldn't he have sent me to another doctor sooner. And by that I am talking about an ears nose and throat guy.The reason I chose to get a second opinion was that the first ent I saw I had to turn the ct right side up.His office was nasty and rusty. There were no patients in the lobby .I just thought that I wanted a second opinion. Then that doc says he didn't see infection in my ct.I then did the same thing, palpated around the implant to show him. Then he says well that is coming from the infection.I said but just not 3 minutes ago you said I didn't have an infection. Now you say there are swollen glands etc...And then he said well you should just go back to your oral surgeon.I said he sent me to you.Why can't someone just be honest with me before I die.Have you got any idea what it feels like to be toothless when you are out in public.Have to decline all invitations of eating out because you basically can eat nothing but oatmeal,milk,etc...Sometimes I am so hungry I just drink a big glass of milk so the hunger pains go away.I have had to struggle with getting referrals and getting to the imaging places when I can barely dress myself.I also have fibro, myofascail,IBS,TMJ,Spinal Stenosis,8 herniatd disc, severe sleep apnea, and with all of that I am having to have injections and constantly going to this doctor or that lab work.I asked my oral surgeon to put me in the hopital and find out what is the problem.I was terrified I had osteomyelitis.I had it in the past.Although no one will be honest about that.Isn't an oral surgeon who has maxiofacial surgery plastered all over his office competent enough to put me in the hospital and find out what the problem is.And by the way the second ent I saw said he didn't do this kind of surgery. So imagine my surprise when I was getting a set of injections on my back  at a one day surgical procedure location to see this second ent who didn't do this kind of surgery or have knowledge of it to walk out in scubs.I don't understand how over a 10 year period,4 different oral surgeons, why did not someone stand up for me instead of worrying about their time being spent supporting another doctor who was incompetant. This has overwhelmed my life and no one has the guts to stand up for me? When I have been done wrong and other people will say so.Just not for the record. They are afraid if they do they will lose their job etc,,,You might think I am being revengeful. When all I want is justice.Aren't doctors supposed to first do no harm. When harm has been done they don't have the guts to say yes this woman has had enough help from doctors who just kept making it worse.I just don't understand why even here at this site. Why won't you see that all I want is someone to agree that I was done wrong and that I do want to tell others so that they wont have this done to them.I want justice. So how can I help others keep from falling for the same line I did......Jo

Although my expertise is not in the field of oral surgery, it does sound like you were treated very badly.  I do know that an infection can be very dangerous and is certainly nothing to play around with.

You can report any mistreatment to your state dental board.  Here is a Web site that gives links to all the state dental boards in the U.S.:  http://www.dentalwatch.org/org/boards.html

If you want to take legal action, you would need to talk to an attorney to find out if you have grounds for a malpractice suit.  Many attorneys will give you a brief initial consultation at no charge.

Jo, I'm appalled at all that you have been through. Your oral surgeon should have ordered a culture. Because he thought it had something  to do with your sinuses instead of your implant he should have referred you to an ENT. He messed up, period. I don't blame you for wanting justice. It does suck that sometimes doctors stick together and cover for each other. You didn't deserve the extra suffering you had to go through. I wish you luck

WOW!!! They really put you through the ringer...I have complained about this for years...Back 60 yrs ago, people did become doctors just because they wanted to help people. Now they become one because that the biggest money maker. I can not say that the oral surgeon was keeping you coming so he could milk ur insurance to pay for his new jag sitting in the drive way. It does not matter the reason behind what he did. I hope you can find a lawyer and sue him. I can go to my mother and tell her I have a tooth ache and she can say Julie honey u have an infection. He is either taking u for a ride, or is using the happy gas on his self. How are you now? you never did say the outcome of all this. Can you finally eat a good meal? One more thing to add, I never like going to the dentist, and alot of times I will call my reg doctor to call me in some antibotics to get through a tooth ache, and your story has made me so upset that this man calls him self a doctor and would let you suffer, that infection goes into ur stomach and can cause problems there to. I am so srry you had all that to happen, makes u lose confidence in mankind...Julie
