Golfing is one of the most difficult activities for the spine. The torque, twisting, and extension forces can throw a touchy low back into a flare-up. I enjoy playing golf, but I have a sensitive low back also. So, I live within my limitations: 9 holes once per week or 18 holes once in a great while. That is my current reality that I accept. Choosing to accept a new reality is very difficult, almost like a grieving process. But, it is even more difficult to force your body to continue to do activities outside of the tissue tolerances.

Now, if unlimited capabilities is your goal, then you may want to accept the risks of surgery. In my experience, even a fusion will not give you unlimited capabilities. So, you need to ask yourself these questions: Can you find a suitable substitute activity that your back will tolerate? Can you live without golf? Can you limit your golf game? Can you accept your new reality?

I had a laminectomy 10 yrs ago and sufferd for 10 yrs. I started having nerve pain and was unable to work anymore. I finally had a fusion in dec 09. I was up walking in a day. In 2 weeks I was able to get in the car and go.  The best thing I ever did was have the fusion. Do not wait untill you have nerve damage or worse: loose strengh in your legs! The recovery time is 3-4 months. I thank god every day I did this. I have other pain issues but I never have pain in my low back. They put a round plastic disc in place of the old one. It has a hole in the middle. they put the plate to secure it. your bone grows through the hole in the plastic disc over time and it fuses together. It stops the instability and pressure on the nerves.  You shold do yourself a big favor and do not suffer for 10 yrs afraid of a fusion.  Good luck , been there and done that!
