Can anyone suggest an alternate nerve pain medication to oxycontin, oxynorm and Lyrica?

Nicole

My partner has suffered from severe nerve pain in his neck and all down the right side of his body, he lost feeling in his right arm and hand for a while but after surgery managed to regain it. Since the surgery, the pain has onset again and he is finding that the medication (ocycontin, oxynorm and Lyrica) he is on is not very beneficial, only just reducing the pain. Daily,he is currently taking 160mg of oxycontin, up to 100mg of oxynorm and 300mg of Lyrica. I think on these levels of these medications he should be getting more relief than he is, and therefore i am asking if there is anyone out there that knows of a medication or medications that are more effective. Please help!Cry

Neuropathic or nerve pain can be difficult to treat thats for sure and treatment recommendations differ between doctors and between different kinds of pain. The link below provides several different alternatives.

On the bright side there is a huge market for a really good neuropathic inhibitor when one shows up. Lyrica was a step forward and its unfortunate its not working in your partner. Pharmaceutical companies are well aware of that and are avidly looking for more answers. The article below also mentions some other options.

hi, sorry to hear about yopur partners pain. You may already have your answers, your message was posted long ago.

I ahve spent 15 years inadequately medicated, and 5 years properly medicated.

Personally, I found that the lyrica was more efficient than the oxycodone and oxynorm. However, having weaned myself off the oxy' moderate release, I use the oxynorm 5mg up to 5 times per day, when needed, and increased the lyrica up to 300mg.  Iam currently on 600 mg of lyrica, use oxynorm only in a crisis, and have jjjust been prescribed a new drug, still an opiate, but not quite as mind bending as oxynorm. Will try to find the packaging and email/contact you again. Unfortunately the pills are downstairs and i am stuck upstairs. hope this is of some help and wish you both well as you can be. regards  Gemma

Hi,

I'm so sorry to hear that you are experiencinng so much pain with little relief.  I have a couple of things that cause changes in my spine and they take turns! LOL.  I've had 6 surgeries to correct 6 different areas so understand intractable nerve pain.  You are on a pretty good whoolop of high-powered meds that should be blocking ANY kind of pain simply by knocking you out.  If it were me, I think I would still want pain control for the moment, but I would also start looking into the possibility that you may have something else going on that that might need a different kind of attention (surgery? bad word, I know).  I think scans to make sure that other anatomical changes are not the cause of your pain might be beneficial.  If all is anatomically ok, TENS units are sometimes very helpful to some people (unfortunately, not all).  TENS unit type implants are also available to help others that surface units do not help.  I guess the bottom line that I am trying to get at is that meds are not the ONLY answer to pain relief.  If you need to get a second or even third opinion -- you don't have to live with excruciating pain!!!  I wish you well and hope this helps.  Jeanne
