I didn't have a Physiatrist when I got my pain pump (October 30, 2003). My pain pump doctor did want me to see a psychiatrist. Basically, they just want to make sure that you are not going to abuse your pump. That sounds like a strange reason, but there are people who are so deperate for relief that they will try to pull out their tubing to get their meds. faster. Also, everything about the pump is run by a computer. It is their job to make sure you get the most out of your pain pump. For example, some people need more medication throughtout the night (to sleep). Some need more in the daytime (to get through work). I just needed it all the time, in a steady manner. The most important thing to remember is they are covering their you-know-whats, the bottom line for them is: Will this person be responsible, and come in for increases, not ignore an alarm [alarms go off if you are overdue for an injection--I'm a big baby and as long as you've had a blood test before, the injection is not something to worry about--, secondly, if your battery is running low], and will this come back on me if he or she can't handle it. The surgery is very expensive, and they want to make sure the right people are getting it. I was very nervous, so I would suggest that you mention to your doctor first thing how you are feeling. Good or bad. Either way, you will still get the pump, and it's normal to worry about what questions they will ask you. If you are scared, you can contact me at mhaschet@comcast.net.
Good luck!

I had to fill out a long questioneer for the shrink to interpret. Hundreds of questions about my pain, surgeries and drugs I take. I am awaiting the approval from my insurance qand medicare to get the pump installed. I have had four back surgeries and five neck surgeries and am still in a lot of pain. I guess all the hardware and failed screws have a lot to do with the pain. The doctor says I will get 100% relief. If it just helps 50% I will be happy. I wish you the best of luck also.
