what is causing me to have large red swollen spots on my leg that is hot to the touch?

The spots are moving up on my leg, they started midway between my ankle and knee, but it is to my knee now with the lower spots disapearing. The size is about a nickle size to a closed fist and are very sore. Its almost like a bad sunburn but swollen.
