Q: Chonric hip pain over 5 years. Intermittent groin pain with "catching" sensation.

I have hip pain comes and go for over 5 years. Labral floaters. Cortisone shot doesn't take care of pain.    I often feel a "catching" sensation in the front of the hip and it causes groin pain.  I've had several MRIs and an artho MRI with contrast that finally showed slight inflammation and slight fraying. Dr. said if cortisone shot didn't take care of the pain, then the labral floaters and fraying aren't significant enough to cause the pain. What else could be causing the pain? I've had this for over 5 years intermittently.  Sometimes it is so bad I use a cane.  It may go away for several months, but then come back if I over exercise or sit too long in one position.

I am researching my hip pain and came across your post. You describe EXACTLY what I experience, every detail. Have you found out anything about it? What is it and what about treatment? Thanks.....Karen

I'm sorry not to have an answer, but I had the same issues you both have had.  However, my doctor decided I had a small labral tear and some "genetic gunk" in there and thought it was worth cleaning out.  So he operated last march. Arthoscopicly (I'm sorry I'm not spellin that right).  I felt much better at first.  I was told to do what ever I wanted as long as it didn't hurt.  I was in physical therapy and was doing great.  Lunges, squats...everything.  I was going to ballgames at the ball park, climbing stairs.  I was feeling wonderful....but the pain started coming back.  And I was told I tore my labrum again.  How could I be so stupid to do lunges and squats and .... but he told me I could do anything!  He made me feel like I was stupid.

So it was under the knife again.  Oct. 13, 2009.  I felt better, but not as much better.  I was sore.  And it never went away.  My hip pops now, very loudly.  I will have these little snaps, but sometimes it will start to hurt and I can feel it starting to freeze, it will lock and it hurts so bad.  I will have to swing my leg to make it un lock and when it pops EVERYONE can hear it.  I see starts and nearly passout.  My quality of life is so low.  They don't pay me much attention because I wasn't working before.  But there is no way I could work now.

I can't clean my house.  I can't stand up long enough to cook a good dinner.  I can't have sex.  This is horrible.  It's much worse than it was before.

I had an MRI on Friday because he thought there may be a foreign object in there catching.  Like bone, or cartilege, or a tool?  But it didn't show anything.  he called me today.  Good news. Your MRI was clean.  The bone looks good.  That means the pain is from the outside.  I'm sorry you can't take anti inflammatories.  I suggest Tylenol and Glucosamine.  No more Vicodin, in other words.  He said he was calling in a pack of steroids for short term pain relief.

and Good bye.

that's it.

I'm in pain 5-6 all the time.  and 8-10 when it locks.  But he just cut me loose.  I've only done exactly what he said.  He did this to me.

What ever you do.  Be careful before you let someone cut on you for this.

Good luck.

(Oh and this was a Duke University, with one of the top doctor's in the country)

Please be careful. If I find out more, I will try and let you know.  I may be going to the Mayo Clinic next.

Sincerely,

wendy

WOW!!!  I have had the same thing!  I walk with very long, very fast strides.  I find when I walk around for a while the pain gets worse.  When the affected leg is in back the the good leg is in full swing forward I feel the "catch" in the injured leg right at the groin.  Something to do with that position/stretch.  Sitting makes it worse.  If I have been sitting at a desk for a while and get up to walk...I hobble like an 90 year old woman because my leg catches if I take any length of stride.  I am only 38!  After a few steps, I can function and it loosens up, but this is ridiculous!  No one has been able to diagnose my issue.  I seem to have flare ups, but cannot pin-point the trigger. Walking hurts worse than running. Sometimes the "catch" or pulling I feel is so acute that I have to hop or I will fall.  I cannot bare any weight...Help...I will keep researching too and help us all if I can....feel better everyone...
