Q: How to handle lower back side pain, near rib cage?

I've been trying to figure out if the pain in my right side, under the ribs, is just gas pain or something more serious. It comes and goes, but when I have it I can't lie down. The pain is excruciating. About 5 years ago, I had pnemonia and my right lung had separated walls. The pnemonia itself wasn't detected by doctors until two weeks in.  I don't know if it might be related, but I have had problems with my breathing ever since, but the pain is new. Can anybody help?

Hi Jeani,

Pain that comes and goes may be gas, but it may also be something else. It's always wise to get a doctor's opinion on any pain, particularly pain you call "excruciating," in case it's a sign of something else. If this isn't something that goes away please talk to your physician about your symptoms. And good luck!
