Percocet and Lortab give me migraines. What else can I take?
I am scheduled for a total knee replacement in a month. I am very concerned about the pain medication they will give me afterwards. I have used percocet and lortab before and both gave me migraine headaches. Is there something else that will relieve my knee surgery pain, but won't give me the pounding headache that lasts for 2 days after one pill?
There are several different ways to treat post-surgical pain. An epidural catheter is most often used for pregnancy but it can also be used to give short term pain relief after knee surgery using opiods. Nerve blocks are also sometimes used. Locally injected anesthetics can provide short term pain relief.
For drugs there are a host of opiod analgesics that can be used. All can be habit forming if abused but there is very little risk of that in the short term if they're used as prescribed. Be sure to tell your doctor of your past experiences and find something - there are alot of pain options available.

Good luck with the surgery!

I have the SAME problem. I have a lot of heath problems that require a narcotic such as Lortab and Perc daily and including post-op pain. Stadol Nasal Spray kills all pain. I origionally took it for migraine and it would take a killer migriane and have me comfortable, if not asleep, in 5 minutes. I started using it for other pain and it was the best. (they can administer it IV or IM in the hospital if you request it) I also use Fiorocet w/ codiene for migraine. That will rid the migraine, for me, but sometimes not strong enough for other pain. My last resort is to take Excedrin w/ the Lortab or Perc, I know the acetaminophen becomes an issue, so I keep that in mind. The only other solution is Imetex and your pain meds. Hope I've helped. I know how horrible migraines are. A lot of people don't understand not all pain meds help every type of pain. Maybe they can give you oxycontin after your knee replacement. That didn't trigger migraine, for me, like the other meds. Best of luck.
