To a certain degree it would depend on what part of the spine the herniation occurs – whether it's a cervical disc or a lumbar disc.  Regardless, I think heavy lifting or any action/movement that puts a strain on the part of the spine with the herniated disc would make it worse.  A doctor or physical therapist could give you more specifics based on the exact location.
