It's not recommended that you try to withdraw from Xanax without medical assistance as the withdrawal symptoms can be severe and even dangerous.  Here is an article by a physician that describes the withdrawal symptoms and the process he uses to help patients who want to discontinue taking Xanax:  Protocol for Treatment of Xanax Withdrawal
