Q: Do people take Topamax for Fibromyalgia?

Does anyone out there take Topamax for Fibromyalgia?  If so,  what do you think?

Some people do take Topamax for fibromyalgia, but it is not a standard treatment.  There are some very serious risks involved with Topamax, so please study it carefully first.  You can find lots of information about it here:  http://www.healthcentral.com/migraine/medications/topamax.html

I saw your post about Topamax for Fibro. Topamax is an anti-seizure drug usually used to treat neuropathy issues in people with Fibro.  I used to take it for mine but now I take Lyrica another seizure drug and it works ALOT better. So if Topamax isn't working well maybe you'll want to try it instead. TTYL, Michele

I have been taking Topamax now for 6mths and I do have Fibromyalgia. I have noticed a huge improvement in my pain management and migraines, although I do suffer some of the side affects Topamax can cause. Memory problems have been abit of nightmare, I am now known to stop in the middle of a sentence because I have forgotten what I was talking about. Or I can't remember what a "dog" is called. This causes me endless amounts of frustration. Also mood swings and nervousness, I have always been a very confident driver but I am not on Topamax and avoid driving as much a possible. I am currently undertaking a Peripheral Nerve Stimulator Trial in hopes that it will help not only my mugraines but my Fibromyalgia too and I can get off all these medications.

HELLO, I HVE BEEN TAKING TOPAMAX FOR OVER A YEAR. I NOT ONLY FEEL LESS PAIN EVERYWHERE, I ALSO LOST 108 POUNDS. I RAN OUT OF IT AND WE LOST OUR INSURANCE. SINCE I HAVE BEEN OFF OF IT I HAVE GAINED 14 POUNDS BACK. I AM MISERABLE AGAIN. I HAD NO SIDE EFFECTS AND GOT REGULARLY BLOOD TESTS FOR LIVER DAMAGE WITH NO BAD RESULTS. I AM NOW GETTING TREATED BY OUR FREE HOSPITAL AND AM WAITING ON MY TOPAMAX TO COME IN. I WILL BE SO HAPPY WHEN I GET BACK ON IT. IT'S APPROVED FOR ALOT OF AILMENTS AND I THINK THE FDA SHOULD APPROVE IT FOR FIBRO. THANKS FOR THE POST.

I was prescribed Topamax for the migraines that I get with my Fibromyalgia.  Didn't realize that taking the Topamax had made such a profound effect on my pain level. I have lost 65 lbs.  I can move, walk and even put in more hours at work.  I am beginning to get a life back that I thought was lost forever.  Trick is to keep adjusting your doseage.  There was a period of time after the huge weight loss before I cut back the doseage when I felt like a complete dork! Now I am at a third of a dose, migraines barely hit and when they come on I take an extra 50 mg to head off.  Fibro isn't gone and won't ever be.  I am having a life again......able to be a mother to an autistic teen and graduating teen.  Able to run my business with my husband.  Feel self worth again.
