I have severe fibromyalgia for years and 3 times I have had surgery with anethesia, ALL the pain and fatigue was gone for at least 2 to 3 months. Could anethesia break the cycle of the nerves that cause this pain.

Then I would wake up one morning and it was all back.  But this happened 3 diggerent

times and I thought it was completely gone and I was someone else.

How interesting!  While I think anesthesia could probably break the pain cycle, most fibromyalgia patients have the opposite experience.  Poorly controlled post-operative pain can actually send the pain cycle into high gear and trigger an FM flare.  Your doctor must have done an excellent job of controlling any post-surgical pain. You've certainly given me something to think about!

Hi, are you a Dr.  I was wondering if the researchers for fibro can find a way

to artificially block whatever anesthesia blocks,  I don't know quite how to

put this, but I think you get the idea.

No, I'm not a doctor, but I do sometimes get the opportunity to talk with FM researchers and I plan to mention your experience to them.  I'll be interested to hear what they think about it.  If I get any major insights, I'll do a SharePost about it.

Karen, I meant no disrespect by asking if you are a doctor.  I just wanted to know if

you were a professional or if you are experiencing  fibromyalgia.

Texasrose,  No problem.  I didn't think you were being disrespectful.  I'm happy to clarify that anytime.  I've had fibromyalgia for about 20 years now.  Please feel free to read my profile if you'd like to know more about my work with FM.  Smile  – Karen

Hi Karen, I just wanted to comment on the anesthesia theory.  I too felt relief from it for a little while.  However, I notice when I go to the Dentist and I get a small amount of nitrious oxide, I feel great.  Abousolutely pain free while I am there and shortly after.  I mentioned this to my dentist and he wasn;t surprised by this as he said it was a muscle relaxant.  I take soma as a relaxant but nothing helped like the nitrious.  I wish they culd bottle that!  Anyone else expierence that?

Karen, I noticed that the people that replied referred to injections and anesthesia

when they felt great afterwards.  Maybe it has something to do with how the

injections and anesthesia affect our Pain Center compared to how medication by

pills do.  I just cannot let go of this because I myself experienced not feeling a

pain anywhere in my body for two to three months after each surgery.  It was like I didn't have a body, which to me is the best feeling I could have.

I used to get regular "trigger point injections" since there are what 14 of them.  This helped and was long lasting (about 3 months).
OH another thing I learned...if you go to some doctors not too hip on this thing, they'll tell you it's in your head and/or to get rid of your stress RIGHT NOW!   I learned to tell the neurologists about my "myofacia" -- entirely different treatment and understanding just by using that magical(?) word.

I know when I was on deaths door, in and out of consiousness, the experience seemed to 'reset' everything in my body and I did not have the pain as severely afterwords if any. I was pain free for a couple of months.
