It can do a number of things; it can heal over time or it can stay the same or it can get worse. According to About.com (http://orthopedics.about.com/cs/herniateddisk/a/ruptureddisk_2.htm) many do heal over time given the correct treatment and provided you don't aggravate them further. Of course that depends on how severely they're torn (i.e. bulge out of position) ; something only your doctor can tell you.
