No, It is brand and I called Purdue and there pharmacist said she dors not know. The doctor said he did not write it on the script and the mail order pharmacy that I have to use due to my insurance said that they don't use that term to ask the doc. He tells me to ask them. on the pictures it shows Sa on this site, but always heard that that was short acting and it is a long acting med, but thank you very much for your reply!!!!!!!

The SA on OxyContin stands for sustained action or slow acting.  There are more than a dozen different abbreviations used by pharmaceutical manufacturers to indicate that a medication is extended release.  Personally, I wish they would settle on one or two so it wouldn't be so confusing for patients.  Here's an article that will explain more about that and gives a list of some of the most common abbreviations used:  Understanding Extended-Release Medications

Karen,

How I agree 100% when you wish the companies would stick with ONE or TWO pairs of letters behind Long-Acting meds!!!  ER, SR, SA, LR, CR......on and on.

Maybe they are just having fun and trying to think of the most 2 letter shortcuts available........to cure their boredom????  J/K  It HAS gotten very confusing, esp. for those new to medications, and those not familiar with the jargon, or not in the medical field.  These are made for patients for goodness sake, who already have a lot to deal with, and shouldn't have to then wonder and worry about the name of their new medications.
