Kidney infections are very painful and usually felt in the area of the back just below the rib cage. Just the slightest thump on the back can send someone with a kidney infection through the roof. Because this is a type of infection, usually one will have other problems like fever, chills, night sweats, painful urination, or blood in the urine. When in doubt, it is best to go to the doctor, urgent care or emergency as soon as possible. Kidneys are pretty important and can get permanently damage from an infection.
