Q: What kind of doctor/specialist would I make an appt for lower back/upper thigh/leg pain?

MRI, one year ago showed Bulging Disc.  I am terribly overweight. The pain started coming on about 4 years ago.  I am having trouble walking.  Some days are good and 90% of the days are so back that I am hoping or can't put pressure on my legs at all.

I am partial to my own specialty area: Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R). As a physiatrist, I am cross-trained in neurology and orthopedics primarily. PM&R doctors see a large variety of chronic conditions that lead to disability including: painful conditions, spinal cord injuries, brain injuries, muscle diseases, neuropathy, traumatic injuries, and the list goes on and on. Many specialty spine clinics employee as physiatrist for the non-operative treatment. You can find a PM&R doctor on the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation site:

Finding a rehab doctor could be a good step in the right direction.

Hi Rose, I recently had surgery for a ruptured disc. Before the surgery I also had lower back pain, w pain and numbness all the way down the leg and into the foot. I also had days when I could barely walk. An MRI in Dec. showed a bulging disc, which they said wouldn't cause this. An MRI two months later, after pain intensified, showed a ruptured disc. They said either it didn't show up on the first one or it got worst since then. I started with my family doctor, was then sent to a pain management doc who was giving me pain block shots, which were not working. Then he referred me to a surgeon, who said surgery was necessary. As soon as I woke from the surgery the leg pain/numbness was gone, thank god. So, I suppose a back surgeon would be the person to talk to. Good luck and let us know how it goes.
