My shoulder hurts...is it osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis is a very common problem. Most people know someone who is dealing with arthritis of at least one joint. Spine, hips, knees, and hands are the most common places for osteoarthritis to cause symptoms. However, any joint can be affected and a common question I hear when a patient presents with shoulder pain is: Do I have arthritis?
First, a bit of anatomy -- the shoulder is composed of two separate joints:
(1) the acromioclavicular joint where the collarbone meets the shoulder bone (2) the glenohumeral joint where the ball of the humerus articulates with the shoulder blade (scapula). Both joints can be affected by osteoarthritis. It is relatively uncommon for osteoarthritis to develop in the glenohumeral joint without a history of trauma or previous injury. We'll discuss that in a minute. First, let's review the acromioclavicular joint.

Hello, I have been having sharp throbbing pain and stiffness in my neck and shoulders. This pain has been going on for a few weeks. I also have bad pain all around the top of my head. The pain occurs at night and in the morning when I wake up and usually last all day long. It may go away for a couple hours throughout the day but it does come back. Other symptoms I am experiencing is nausea, occasional tenderness, I feel emotional and vulnerable, and there is pressure in my head and I do feel it when I move it or sit still. I do not feel any pressure in my eyes or any vision problems and I do not hear any swishing in my ears. I have tried over the counter medications such as Advil, Aleve, and Excedrin migraine. But none of them work. I have also been experiencing shortness of breath in the morning for the past few days, feeling very cold before going to bed and a sharp pain going across my upper abdomen. I have gone to the doctor and he wasn’t very much help...
I have Intermittent sharp pain on left side of my head. The pain is left side, near back of head. It started 6 days ago, I have tried several over counter meds. Excedrin Migraine, to BC Powders. Nothing has worked.
I have made appointment with my Doctor, next week. What do you think this pain could be. I have never suffered with Migraine Head aches before. Thank You, Joann.
The pain you describe could be any number of things. You don't mention how long the pain lasts. If it lasts just seconds, it could be ice pick headaches, but only your own doctor will be able to confirm a diagnosis. You can find some information on ice pick headaches in Ice Pick Headaches - The Basics .
Are you having any other symptoms? If not, these are unlikely to be Migraines because Migraines have other symptoms in addition to head pain. See Anatomy of a Migraine for more infor...
