When someone comes to me in this very same situation, I try to be open and non-judgmental. I realize that some people do not like to see doctors and some doctors do not like to prescribe pain medications or treat pain. This drives pain patients to the streets which is not only dangerous, but also risks serious legal trouble. Of course, I have to verify information for safety's sake. So, I use urine drug screening and contact the Department of Justice for medication information on all patients. These tools help me to keep the dishonest, "bad apples" out. And you know what they say about bad apples... they ruin the basket. My patients appreciate these efforts because they would hate to see a legitimate pain management practice ruined. If there is nothing but honesty between you and your doctor, there should not be a problem.   Another option to help get off of methadone or other street drugs is Suboxone. My sharepost next week will explain Suboxone in detail. For now, you can find information at www.turntohelp.com  This website can also help you find a doctor who can help. Stay tuned for more information.   Dr. Christina Lasich, MD
