Q: Stabbing pain in back when breathing or coughing?

I have pain in my back on both sides, and I get sharp pains when I breathe in or cough. I also experience a burning sensation that is very painful. Do you know what could be causing this?

Hi Susan -

I know this is a very old question, and I hope that you've long ago found the cause of this pain and are well over it by now. I did want someone from our staff to answer your question though!  I'm only a layperson and thus can't diagnose your issue, but what you describe could be caused by costochondritis, a disc problem, or a muscle or ligament strain. Did you ever see a doctor to find out what the problem was?  If so, perhaps you would come back and let us know what your doctors found and how it was treated.  It could be very helpful to someone else in the community who is experiencing the same symptoms.
