Q: Pain in the top of foot near toes?

The top of my foot from the big toe to the 4th toe is painful and swollen. I went to the doctor and he took an X-ray. It came back negative for any stress fracture. Any suggestions as to what it could be?

Foot pain can be very complicated and confusing to diagnosis by anyone but a foot specialist. The foot has so many parts and pieces that can become painful; thus, there are many opportunities for a erroneous dignosis of foot conditions. This particular pain could be an early arthritic condition that will not show up on plain X-ray, an occult fracture that will not show up on plain X-ray, or a soft tissue problem in the nerves, muscles or tendons that will not show up on plain X-ray. See a specialist to take a closer look.
