I am wondering if anyone out there has severely herniated discs, DDD and also a small baby?
Hello, I'm new here and this is my first time to do this, so please bear with me...
I am in extreme pain daily, and have to be medicated just to survive on a daily basis, some days are worse than others. Now I have a beautiful newborn
..and she now weighs over 10lbs. (she was little at birth). She is at the stage where she constantly wants to be held especially by me...I LOVE IT!!
! and would'nt trade it for the world, but it is becoming more difficult and painful to do this
(especially all day & night). I have horrid spasms in my Right leg and back. I have a snugli but not the good one with the lumbar support(I am looking for one though). Has anyone else done this or been through something similar??? I need suggestions and help please!!! Thank you in advance!! Steffi
Congratulations on your new baby! I know she is the joy of your life. I can't really give you personal experience – although I had three children, they were born well before my pain problems began. However, I do know what strain little ones can put on even a healthy back.
You might consider seeing a physical and/or occupational therapist. They should be able to teach you the best ways to lift and carry your baby to reduce the strain on your back. A physical therapist should also be able to give you some exercises to help strengthen your back. Your baby is only going to get bigger and she's still going to want mommy to pick her up and hold her when she's two and three years old. So the sooner you learn the best way to do it, the better for you. In the meantime, I found a few tips from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons that may be helpful – mostly for lifting her. I also found what is supposed to be the top 10 baby carriers for back pain. Be sure to read the reviews as a few seem to have some negative reviews even though they're high on the list. Hopefully this can help you decide which would be best for you. Here's the link: http://wize.com/baby-carriers/t6486-back-pain
I wish you many happy, healthy years as you raise your little girl.

I have been through it and done it all since 2003 - I have DDD and had a L5-S1 fusion at 38; now I'm 42 and my youngest is now 9. Finally I am in the very last treatment option - a pain pump trial and implant (if it is successful).
Advice to you lean on anyone and everyone you can; but also seek a pain specialist who can offer you a TENS Unit or a Spinal Cord Stimulator also known as a neurostimulator (Advanced Bionics or Medtronics either will be good); i know what it is like to have to live in bed and not be able to take care of your child or be able to even get up to feed yourself....look into this it is a non-drug related option. Totally worth a trial (it is like an epidural and you wear a little controller on your pants waist) if it works then you can get it implanted and it works like a charm for a lot of people. I am keeping my stimulator and having a pump trial and implantation if it works because the stimulator only takes care of part of my pain.
Congrats on your baby!
