Muscle spasms are short lasting spasms of the muscle that are painful. Muscle twitches produce are like little muscle spasms that can be viewed under the skin but  are not painful.

Muscle could be caused by something as simple as a electrolyte problem or they could be caused by a disease such as diabetes, kidney problems, anemia, thyroid problems, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis or other problems. There's really no way to tell without seeing a physician but if they've have gotten to the point where they're keeping you up at night then it's clearly time to get some help. Good luck!
