Q: Namenda for refractory migraine pain relief?

I have had chronic headaches, L sided for over 40 years.  My first headache was daily for 1 1/2  yrs - shooting pains on L side up back of neck over top of head.  What followed was very typical migraine, and I have been to so many docs, headache clinics and on so many medications I am afraid to try new ones now because as I get older I just don't bounce back from these meds like I used to.

My pain doc wants to try me on Namenda, delvelped for moderate to severe Alzheimer's patients to improve memory.  I know there have been headache pain relieg studies done but cannot find them in my research.  I am reluctant to take this medicine - the side effects are quite bad, including headaches, and I now go into rebound headaches so quickly from most medicines that I won't risk all that pain.  I spend at least 2 weeks in bed every month unable to function, and sometimes more.  Headaches come every week to 10 days, often only 2 - 3 days apart.  Can you give me information on this medication for pain use?

I'm sorry you're having so much pain. I looked up Namenda's side effects and headache was a side effect in 6% of the recipients and 3% of those taking placebo so its probably in about 3% of people who wouldn't otherwise have a headache.

There is a rationale for treating migraine/headache with Namenda and a preliminary study found that it was effective in reducing migraine frequency (>50% less) and intensity with other medication use for migraine relief dropping significantly.

You can find some information on that study here http://www.healthcentral.com/migraine/medications-193210-5.html

Good luck with getting relief from your headaches.
