Q: Is Taking Lexapro And Prozac Together Safe for anxiety

I have been on Prozac for several years to fight mild depression, but I have suffered acute anxiety attacks in the past. Recently the old feelings of anxiety have come back...my doctor prescribed Lexapro to take with the Prosac..is that safe or will there be bad side effects?

If I'm reading the Drug Interactions checker right, using these two drugs together could decrease your bodies clearance of Lexapro - which means more of it would stay in your system longer than if you weren't taken Prozac with it. Your doctor may have already taken this into account by having you on a lower dose. These two drugs are reported to have a 'moderate' interaction together. If you're having trouble be sure to tell your doctor.

Thank you for your quick response...I had taken 1.0mg zanex when I was feeling a little anxious and he would not prescribe this again. The zanex worked very well and quickly, and I was wondering why he did not feel I should have it again...Does Lexapro have to be taken regularly to work or can it be taken only as needed?
