knee replacement
My partner is having a total knee replacement on his right first, the left one will come the following year as I understand it takes one year to heal. The questions I have are as follows: can I kneel down, can I walk up hill, what is the rule on how much weight I can pack. (i.e. I am building a house and putting blocks down in the basement); am I allowed to pact to cement blocks from the pile to the wall 50 yards away? If anyone out there has had knee replacement did you have stainless steel parts put in you or is there any other new knee replacement techniques that aren't so tramatic.
Thank you Molly Frost for Bill Robertson
The speed and length of recovery will vary some from patient to patient. It's important to begin mild exercises soon after surgery, but trying to do too much too soon can result in more pain and more problems. You'll need to ask your doctor about the specific activities you mentioned, but I can give you links to some good information about exercise after total knee replacement and a general list of dos and don'ts.
These links are to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons site:
Total Knee Replacement Info Be sure to read the section entitled "Realistic Expectations About Knee Replacement Surgery." There is also a diagram in that section that lists which activities you can and cannot do.

I wish you the best with your surgery and recovery.

I have had both knees replaced - 10 weeks apart. I went home the next morning after the second one. The first 8 days are rough and it is nice to have help-I didn't. I can do anything except run or jog or jump-too much pressure. Do your exercises and use a cane as soon as possible and it is all up to you. Best thing I have ever done. Be sure you have a good orthopedic surgeon. Good luck and you will be so happy. Some docs will do both at the same time.

I have had both knees replaced about a year apart. At this time I cannot kneel without a lot of pain. It is important to do all the exercizes and to keep active. Communicate as much as possible with your doctor and physical therapy people, they are key to recovery.

I had a knee replacement about three years ago and it is working great now, The main thing is exercise and the only way I found to get exercise is swimming, the water keeps you stable and helps keep the weight off the knee get two of those noodles and use them for boyancy, use the pool to stretch the knee and get function and yes if you get the dupree with the chrome cap and replacable incert you can kneel somewhat and you can walk to your hearts content.

Hello,
My name is Debi and yes I have a total knee replacement on my left knee in 2001.
My knee replacement consists of Titanium and cermic. I was up walking the day of my surgery. It is a hard recovery BUT you do have to follow and do all of the exercises and therapy even though it is painful,
It may take up to a year but it all depends on the individual and how hard the follow through.
I walked with a walker, then a cane some, but with the cane I walked alone alot.
Weight wise I think it will again, depend on each individual.
Hope I was of some help,
Debi
