Considering a med. change, need advice!
I have been on MS Contin 60mgs. 3x a day, with 15 mg. roxicodone for breakthrough. Seems only relief is from the oxycodone. When I mentioned this to my Pain Spec., I asked why a time release form of oxycodone would not be a better choice, given I get best relief from them.
He immediately said, yes, they make Oxycontin, but not as reliable with cotrolled release of medication. And that was that.
All bullcrap aside, is oxycontin that much more"unstable or more harmfull than MS Contin".
I need to know, because I am tired of being in pain if I dont have to be, just because he is worried about prescribing Oxycontin. I will consider changing Dr.'s, if I can find reason to.
So I guess my big question is what's the comparison of the two, I know the oxycodone works, so I am very confused and just want some relief, thank you in advance, if anyone can share their story or knowledge.
I'm not an expert, but I've never heard that the controlled release part of Oxycontin isn't as reliable as MS Contin. I take Oxycontin and Oxycodone for breakthrough pain and it works really well most of the time. Some days my pain level is just too high for good relief. I was on MS Contin before without as much relief. Some doctors are just too afraid to prescribe Oxycontin and maybe that is what your doctors problem is. Good luck to you.

Been there, heard that same line of BS. Finally was told the truth-the state pharmacy board makes it really difficult on the practitioners who do prescribe oxy in some states by making them do prescription reviews, write a justification for using it and not something else, etc, etc, etc just because a few docs abused writing it and there was so much publicity. My new doc just came out and said she won't prescribe it for anyone for any reason-even tho I was on it a while back before it went generic and it worked better (had to change drugs due to cost issues then)

Well, I'm on SSD, but I'm lucky enough to be able to get the VA to pay for my meds, but I do have a couple of friends that have Medicaid and they didn't have any problems with getting the generic oxy paid for. One had to have his Dr write a note saying why he needed oxy, but it was more because he'd taken percodan for several years and they wanted to know why he was now needing something stronger. He had no problem after that. The other never had any problems at all, since the generic price isn't much more than vicoden where we live. In this area, getting someone to write the script is the major problem. Once you get that done, payment isn't much of a problem. In Iowa, the Pharmacy Board has the right to review narcotics Rx's and then they complain to the Medical Board if they don't like something, then the docs get disciplined and can't write Rx for narcotics anymore. It's really rediculous!! No pharmacist should be able to do that. If they want to be a doctor-go to medical school, not pharmacy school!

Thanks for the info, I actually asked a pharmacist once, why they didnt go to med. school if they knew everything, they caught me on a bad day! Hard enough dealing with all the stares and funny looks you get, when youre ina crowded pharmacy.
I asked her if she actually had any chronic pain, if not just fill the prescription, so I can go home, and be in pain for the rest of my life, and told her how lucky she was not to have to deal with people like herself.
Told her,I didnt know I had to bring in my medical records and MRI film to get the meds I needed, I have since changed pharmacies.
Thanks again, sorry for venting!

No problem! It might possibly piss me off a teensy bit more because I worked as an RN with a Master's degree AND an Educational Doctorate in Nursing. My best friend is a pharmacist and it irritates her when her peers get that kind of attitude-she's the first to admit they aren't taught squat about disease processes, so they really don't have any business at all getting that involved unless they are part of a treatment TEAM in a hospital setting where they provide information-not judgements.

I have taken the oxycontin 40mgs. 2x a day with roxicodone for breakthrough about 2 months now and so far it seems to help. However the oxycontin instead of lasting 12hrs. only last about 10hrs. Never took the MsContin

What's this world coming to, you find something that works, and they just say no!
As far as the generic thing goes, does Medicaid-disability pay for Oxycontin,(not SSDI), just through the Medicaid disability, still got a couple years before I can get money to live on, that I've been paying into for my whole life!
