Q: morphine and pain

i am taking morphine at the moment, because i had RFA, the pain was the most unbearable,, i have ever endured!..and the morphine is not helping, i thought morphine was one of the strongest pain medication you could ake, thus, my question, why is it not working?? what is the highest dosage they can give you??.. i will not ask for a higher dosage, because of the "looks" drs. give you when you ask them to "up" your pain meds, but was just wondering??..thanx, cindi

Hmmm...well, there are drugs much stronger than morphine-perhaps you should look into the other narcotics. Sometimes there's a mixture of some like Kadian, MS Contin, Oxycontin, one of these may work if the other doesn't. I do know that the milligrams can go up in the thousands, but they usually only do that for cancer patients. You might want to try narcotics via nerve pain, like Lyrica, or Neurontin, but I should warn you now, both cause weight gain. I understand how you are treated by the Pain doctors- a lot of them get in trouble when it turns out that their patients are addicted and are abusing the drugs that they prescribe- some have died and the doctors have been sued for malpractice. It's quickly becoming a field medical professionals are leery of. My suggestion is to talk to your doctor about experimenting with several different types of pain killers at the same time before you ask for a higher dose. Sometimes they work well together with something else than on their own. Please stay strong.
