Thursday, May 20, 2010 Desiree R. Forsyth asks

Q: What do you do or ask for when your Rx for Oxymorphone isnt working?

I am on 30mg of Opana ER and 10mg of Opana fast relief. What other options should I discuss with my doctor. The medicine is only lasting 3-4 hours. It seems as if the pain comes back with intensity. I have only been on this medication for approx. 7 days.  I am a candidate for Posterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion, I am looking for a second opinion.

I am not in a position to give a second opinion. But I can say that "end of dose failure" is what you are experiencing. When someone tells me that the medication is failing after a short period of time, my options are to:

1) Increase the dose because a higher doses can last longer

2) Increase the frequency of use. For example some "twice a day" medications actually work better three times per day.

3) Change medications to something that can last longer based on design of the product or chemical stability

Your doctor has the same options when you tell him/her that the medication is not improving your life.
