Q: Uncle in Pain for 4 years . . no idea what it is??

Hi, I have an uncle who has been in chronic pain for 4 years now. He has been to his local doctor and all the specialists the doctor has sent him to. My uncle was a healthy, active man and now he is a weak, 40 something that looks like he is 60.

The doctors had told him that is was lung cancer to begin with. They did surgery and took out a piece of his lung (it was not cancer), then they also took out a piece of his rib - I cannot remember why. The pain never stopped. After a while, they told him it was intercostal nerve damage from the surgery. He went through a few rounds of the nerve block shots, they did not work. Now, he is on oxygen and pain meds. The doctor has no more answers for him. Along with this, he has gone to the emergency room because of stomach pains and it turned out he needed to go to the bathroom - - let's just say he cleaned out the emergency for a few hours. The doctor said he needs to get used to it. They have even told him that it was all in his head and sent him to a shrink.

Because of all of this he has lost his job, he chooses not to drive (because of all the pain meds he is on), and his wife is afraid to leave him alone. His son and daughter-in-law, along with their 1 year old baby have moved back into their house just to make sure that they do not lose their home. He has applied for disability, but they tell him that he does not apply.

There needs to be someone somewhere that can help him. Please, if you have any lead as to where he can go, contact me. He is tired of being poked and prodded, but something needs to be done. He is scared of being in pain but also scared to see doctors because he doesn't see where they have been helpful in the past. If you have any info, please post here and send a copy to my e-mail to make sure I recieve it.

Thanks and happy holidays.

I am so sorry to hear about your Uncle's pain.  He must take enough pain med first to get good pain coverage.  Be sure he has that, I don't understand from your post whether he has cancer or not, but I would sure as heck get a copy of his medical records by contacting the medical records dept. they will charge you by the page.  Every hospital is different.  He has to maintain good bowel health due to lack of inactivity and the use of narcotics.  Eating high fiber cereals, (Uncle Sam cereal) psyllium products - health food section, or stool softeners w/Senna are good.  If the pain management Dr. isn't helping him, he needs to find another.  THere are others out there.  It certainly sounds like he qualifies for disability and he needs to apply right now.  The best thing you can do is go down to the SS office in your area with him, and apply right there.  I have been told that people who apply on-line, always make mistakes, so you are much better off if you apply right the first time and go straight to the office.  But you gotta do it now, it may effect what he gets for benefits if you wait.  Good Luck!!
