Q: For the past year I have been having problems with my right leg and foot

For the past year I have been having problems with my right leg and foot which could be due to several falls. When walking or standing I have pain in the top of my leg, numbness and a heavy feeling in my lower leg and foot, which is also swollen. A X Ray on my hip joint shows a little arthritis and my Doctor has prescribed six paracetamols per day. They do not relieve my condition though! I do not have pain in my back, bottom, or back of my leg.

I have tied rubbing creams, a tens machine, and stronger pain killers with no affect.

Any advise would be appreciated as being an active person all my life [90 yrs] this pain and inactivity are making me severely depressed.

I really don't have a clue but I do think you should get another opinion and more testing done. A year is a long time to be offered nothing other than acetaminophen. I would get a doctor with fresh eyes to look at your problem. The body is very complex and it's easy to miss something.  Good luck!

Thank you for your response. I will have to see my doctor again (same one as we have the NHS here in England so little choice ).

Have you previously been checked for diabetes, neuropathy and/or PAD (peripheral artery disease)?  All of these can have similar symptoms.  When I presented with edema (foot & leg swelling) PAD was the first thing my doctor checked.  I eventally learned that my edema was cause by my blood pressure medication as within 4 days of changing it, the edema disappeared and has never returned.
