Q: I have Fibromyalgia& take Lyrica but it causes weight gain, is there an alternative?

I was wondering if there is something besides lyrica to take for FM that doesn't cause weight gain?

Although Lyrica is the only FDA approved drug for fibromyalgia, a number of other medications are prescribed off-label for FM.  Neurontin, like Lyrica, is an anticonvulsant that many FM patients have found helpful – and I haven't heard any complaints of weight gain with Neurontin.  To learn more about other medications used to treat FM, read "Medications Prescribed for Fibromyalgia."

a neurologist told me that the reason that Lyrica and Neurontin cause the weght gain is that these effect neuro transmitters. could also be a reason for psyche issues as well.

I was taking Lyrica 450 mg a day and I gained weight. I quit taking Lyrica and am now on Topamax 75 mg a day and have managed to lose 15 pounds since beginning to take the Topamax. The Lyrica also seemed to dope me up as did Neurontin when I was on that. I have had no problem with this side effect while on Topamax. Good Luck.
