Topics:Oxycontin

i am currently taking 2 80mg oxycontin a day and 2 10 mg percoset a day for severe chronic back and neck pain Ive been taking them for about 2 years now and still havent got used to the way they make me feel. They provide moderate pain relief at best and I'm starting to feel maybe its not right for me. I was happy at first because it gave me some relief from the pain but now i wonder if its worth it.

Hi John,

There are lots of pain drugs out there. A good number of them are narcotic type drugs that probably work in a similar fashion to those you're taking.  Lyrica works in an entirely different fashion and has  recently been approved for fibromyalgia. Several drugs that were originally tabbed as anti-anxiety and anti-depressants can also be quite helpful in pain. I've heard that the nervous system circuits that effect pain, anxiety etc. are apparently found close to and interact with  each other - so those are real possibilities.  If you have inflammation there are anti-inflammatories and, of course, there are muscle relaxants as well.

Some people with pain are also helped by meditation techniques called 'mindfulness based stress reduction'. John Kabat Zinn has some books on those techniques. Other people are helped by acupuncture.

Good luck.

Hello there...Iam a seasoned veteran on opiates and all the chronic pain medications mostly on the market!! LOL...tried them all...from A to Z...and the one that i have been more sucessful with is the Fentanyl patches..that deliver medications thru the skin..so you totally eliminate taking pills and their side effects..Fentanyl is a very potent pain medication..better than Morphine...and i take some tramadol for break thru pain....

SOrry to say...but.you will be so sorry when you decide to quit.your Oxys..wow..that withdrawels are like your in hell and back...Iam thru with all that suffering from all those pills..my stomach lining now is so healthy, from not taking so much medications, and free of severe constipation, since all opiates. like Oxy, codeine, Vicodin, thats its first effect that you get from taking all of those pain pills...

well..talk you your DR..and see if you can start on this..

but these are for chronic severe pain 24/7...

hope it helped ya!

There are several other options you can consider for treatment. I had been on high doses of pain meds which weren't doing much. Learning some stress management techniques has helped me very much. I have also used acupuncture. The regimen which is working best for me right now is a combination of relaxation and medication. I use some hypnosis pain management audios from the hypnosis network two times each day. These are very relaxing and have helped me a lot. If you are not feeling that medicine is working you should definitely talk to your doctor about other options.
