Lipitor is the worlds best selling drug (!) and companies are vying for a piece of the market. The patent for Lipitor expires in 2010. Pfizer made an agreement with an Indian company to hold off their generic version until 2011 but just a few days ago another Indian manufacturer, Dr. Reddy, announced they'd formed a generic version they hoped to bring to market in 2010. They're currently filing the necessary paperwork to get it approved in the US sometime in 2010. It sounds like it will be available then. The price is unclear but it should be lower than the original.
