Saturday, December 19, 2009 Alan "SadSack" Beeching asks

Q: Are there any "New" treatments or even a "Cure" for Diabetes Type 2?

Frown G'day to all,

I'm a "newbie" in this Forum. I come from Australia and suffer a number of injuries / diseases but the one that I reckon is the worst has to be "Diabetes". I'm having a battle with it at the moment.

I've had it from 2001. At first I just absolutely ignored it! I was in total "denial" . However it didn't take long to make it's presence felt. Currently I'm taking "Metformin x 1000 mg 3 times a day plus "Lantus" Insulin on a "PRN" basis. Does anyone know of ANY new treatments?

Im not really game to ask this question but if you don't ask you don't get sort of thing. Have the researchers found a cure for Diabetes type 2 ? (I'm not very hopeful but I guess you can live in hope)

I wish to take ths opportunity to Thank Heaps to all of the Doctors and healthcare professionals who take the time to help out on forums such as this. Believe me we really do appreciate your help.

Hello and "ooroo" to everyone. If I can ever be of ANY assistance, please don't hesitate, send me an e-mail.

                            Kind Regards,

                                                               "Sad Sack"

Hi Alan,

Welcome to ChronicPainConnection!  I was diagnosed with diabetes type 2 a year ago and am still learning about it.  I also take metformin and occasionally take a glypizide tablet if my glucose level goes way up.  I do know there hasn't been a cure found, but there are a number of newer medications available in the U.S.  I'm afraid I don't know much about which medications have been approved in Australia.

We have an excellent diabetes site that I'm sure can give you lots more information.  That's where I go whenever I have a question.  Here's a link:  MyDiabetesCentral.com  There may also be someone there who knows more about what is available in Australia.  You might also want to subscribe to their newsletter.  That will help keep you up on the latest developments for diabetes.

Good luck to you!  – Karen

Wink Dear Karen,

First up, Thank You for replying to my query and secondly Thank You for replying in such a timely manner.

I understand that this area is for "Chronic Pain"  and with that in mind, May I ask you just a couple of "supplemental" questions? The questions actually surround the "Agent" that I'm currently using in my "Intrathecal" pump.

                        1. "What is your opinion in relation to Dilaudid" ? (As a pain medication for mid to lower Spinal pain) and:

                        2. "As I suffer Fluid Retention as a side effect of using Dilaudid,

are you in a position to be able to advise IF, to your knowledge, there is an alternate drug which performs as well if not better than Dilaudid in this type of application?

Karen,

I understand that the degree Pain is very much an "Individual" perception. What is "Unbearable Pain" to one person may not seem that "Intolerable" to another. So with that in mind when answering my questions above, May I advise that I have lived with Chronic Pain for a very long time. I also understand the problems associated with "Opoids" or "Opiates" I'm just trying to mitigate their affects on my Bodily Systems. Thanks once again.

Dear Alan,

Morphine is the most common medication used in the intrathecal pain pump, although a few different pain medications (like Dilaudid) and/or muscle relaxants can be used.  Since everyone responds differently, it's a matter of finding which medication works best for you with the fewest side effects.

When it comes to intrathecal pain pumps, the very best place to get answers is on our forum.  That's where everyone gathers to discuss anything to do with intrathecal pain pumps.  There is an excellent ongoing thread entitled “Willing to share experience with intrathecal morphine pump implant” that was started and is maintained by Bob Englebardt.  He has a lot of personal experience with the pump and has been helping people here for several years.  It's a really long thread, but rest assured your post will be read and answered.  You may find an answer to your question already there, but if not, just click on the last page and post your question.  Click on the link above to go directly to this thread on the forum.

(Note:  If you've never been to the forum before, you'll have to register separately from your registration here on ChronicPainConnection.  You can, however, use the same e-mail address and password if you like to make it easier to remember.)

Best,

Karen
