The foot is a rather complicated area but to keep things simple doctors break it down into three parts: the forefoot (toe area), the midfoot (the middle) and the hindfoot (the ankle area). The top of the foot is called the dorsal side.

Dorsal midfoot pain is usually from a ligament injury called a midfoot sprain. But, a stress fracture of the navicular bone is also a possibility. So, persistant pain that is not improving requires a bone scan.

The best shoe to relieve stress in the foot is one that has a "rocker bottom" sole which is curved. It works like a rocking chair and minimizes stress on the foot joints. Shoes can make a world of difference for pain in many places.
