A cell protein commonly used to diagnose prostate cancer may work as a pain medication that's more effective than morphine, researchers say. An international team of scientists working with mice found that Prostatic Acid Phosphatase, or PAP, was the same as a protein found on pain-sensing neurons. This protein switches the chemical messengers that cause pain into ones that suppress it.
