The standard treatments for tension-type headaches are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin and ibuprofen, and tricyclic antidepressants, usually amitriptyline (Elavil, Endep). A number of investigational drugs, such as botulinum toxin (Botox), tizanidine (Zanaflex), and nitric synthase inhibitors are showing promise.
