Nerve discovery sheds light on chronic pain
(The Australian) UPDATED 2008-04-04
Australian researchers have made a discovery that they say sheds
new light on the roots of chronic pain, a discovery that could lead
to new treatments. Scientists working with rats used dye to follow
the path of pain signals in the brain. They found that when pain
reaches one part of the brain, it sends out a signal to another
part of the brain that triggers emotional responses, and this could
lead to anxiety and heightened perceptions of pain. Experts say
this may explain why chronic pain sufferers respond so well to
psychological interventions that help them control their condition.
