Poisonous Snail May Treat Chronic Nerve Pain

Two drugmakers are collaborating on the development of pain medications made from the venom of cone snails, a marine species that lives on the Great Barrier Reef. AstraZeneca and the Australian biotechnology company Xenome are working on four possible new drugs made from cone snail venom, which works by paralyzing the nerve pathways of the snail's victims. Researchers hope to use compounds in the venom to interfere with the nerve pathways of people who suffer from pain, thus relieving their symptoms.  Read full story >
