According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, avian influenza A viruses usually do not infect humans, but the rare cases of human infection have occurred following direct contact with infected poultry. Human infection ranged from eye infections (conjunctivitis) to severe respiratory disease (pneumonia) to death.
