Q: Sudden unexplained joint pain and immobility in 19 y/o female, x-rays and bloodwork clean.
I'm 19, female, no history of chronic illness. I habitually crack and pop all of my joints and suffered from a luxating patella at age 14 but have been otherwise free of joint problems. Two nights ago I was at work, on register, when my right elbow suddenly stiffened up. I had not hit it on anything or injured it in anyway. The pain was intense. I could not fully extend or bend it and whenever I attempted to do either my fingers would pulse and tingle. Over the last 42 hours I have experienced pins and needles, stiffness, occasional numbness, tingling and throbbing down my entire arm, with the majority of the pain concentrated in my elbow. The joint is swollen but does better with compression. The ER doctor diagnosed me with a "sprained elbow" but was very dismissive and patronizing. My x-rays and bloodwork were clean and I am still waiting on my lyme results. Does anyone have any idea what could have caused such sudden stiffness and immobility?
