6 Tips to Avoid the Office Cold

Avoid high-touch office items

Germs fester on areas that are touched most often in the office environment. The germiest places include, the office phone, personal desktop, computer keyboard, microwave oven door and water fountain handle.

Disinfect your personal workspace
Disinfect your personal workspace

Oftentimes cleaning crews are not allowed to touch your personal space, and therefore do not clean your area the way that a public space - like the bathroom - gets cleaned. Once a day, use a disenfenctant wipe or rubbing alcohol to scrub down your workstation. It can kill 99 percent of the germs.

Nobody likes to take a day off when they're sick unless it's absolutely necessary, but, sometimes it's best to stay home because you are exposing coworkers to your germs. Try to sit further away from coworkers who appear to have a cold, as a sneeze can travel up to three feet.

Carry hand sanitizer
Carry hand sanitizer

Washing your hands is the most effective way to keep yourself germ free, but if you can't leave your desk having a hand sanitizer on hand is also effective.

Try not to touch your face
Try not to touch your face

When you touch your eyes, nose or mouth, you are helping germs get in your body. Try not to put your fingers near your face, and instead try squeezing a stress ball or find another way to release nervous energy.

Whatever you have found that helps boost your immune system is useful to have stashed at your desk. Whether that means taking Vitamin C or another product, it can't hurt to try to avoid an oncoming cold.
