World H1N1 flu virus cases top 700

World Health Organization (WHO) officials say the number of confirmed cases of the H1N1 virus--also known as swine flu--has risen to more than 700. At a press release in Geneva, WHO representatives urged governments and citizens to "prepare and be ready" as the number of cases increases worldwide. The WHO's global alert remains at level 5, which is characterized by human-to-human spread of the virus into at least two countries in one WHO region. The declaration of Phase 5 is a strong signal that a global pandemic is imminent and that the time to finalize the organization, communication, and implementation of the planned mitigation measures is short. The number of cases in the United States is listed at 172, with one death reported.  Read full story >
