Vitamin D May Protect Against Flu, Respiratory Diseases

A study of 200 patients has found that vitamin D may help prevent respiratory infections such as the flu. Over the course of the trial, 16 percent of the patients who maintained levels of vitamin D of 38 ng/ml developed viral infections, while 45 percent of the patients with low vitamin D developed infections. Researchers say lower levels of vitamin D during the winter months may explain why viruses such as the flu spread so rapidly.
