Study Finds Fewer Asthmatics Die of Swine Flu

Asthmatics who are admitted to a hospital with swine flu are half as likely to die as their peers, a new study has found. Researchers say that the results are surprising, since people with asthma showed more severe breathing problems and similar rates of pneumonia as patients who had swine flu but were not asthmatic. Experts say one reason for the results may be that asthma patients are admitted to the hospital more quickly, and are given steroid treatments more quickly than those who do not have a history of breathing problems. Patients may also have been taking inhaled steroids before their hospital admission, which may have given them an advantage when dealing with the virus.
