Symptoms: Swine Flu

Cases of swine flu have been reported in several countries, including the United States, where dozens of cases have been confirmed. Learn the signs, symptoms and treatments for swine flu here.

Swine flu is caused by type A influenza (also known as H1N1).

Swine Flu symptoms are similar to the flu that normally infects humans.

Symptoms include:
fever
cough
sore throat
body aches
headache
chills
extreme fatigue

Some people have reported diarrhea and vomiting associated with swine flu.

Swine flu may cause a worsening of underlying chronic medical conditions, such as asthma, COPD and other respiratory conditions. People taking immune-system suppressing medication or who have autoimmune disease and immune system disorders and other conditions should be especially careful as well.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend recommend Tamiflu (oseltamivir) or Relenza (zanamivir), antiviral drugs for the treatment of infection with these swine influenza viruses.
The drugs are available only by prescription. They work by keeping flu viruses from reproducing in your body. The antiviral drugs work best when started within 48 hours (two days) of symptoms appearing. They can make flu symptoms milder and help a person recover faster. They may also prevent serious flu complications such as pneumonia.

Public health officials have so far noted that, so far, American cases of swine flu have been mild and many of those persons who are recovering have gotten better without drugs.

See a doctor if you live in areas where swine flu cases have been identified and you become ill with flu-like symptoms such as fever, sore throat, body aches, fatigue or vomiting.
Your doctor will determine if flu testing or flu treatment is needed.
