This was a really great article, Jane. I love how you provided the juxtapositions of two opposing approaches to everything. Really thought provoking. I'd love for my mother (who has end-stage, severe COPD) to read this, but her cognitive status would not permit her to truly understand the message, I'm quite sure.
She has definitely taken the passive, I give up, route, though.
Thanks for sharing these viewpoints with us... Kathi
Thanks, Kathi,
I'm glad you found this helpful and I wish your mother could be helped by it, as well. You never know, maybe if you read it to her...
I can't take much credit for the juxtapositions. Jo-Von Tucker first wrote them, and I did some editing. After Jo-Von passed away a mutual colleague, a physician, bestowed her writings upon me, asking me to share them.

This is a great article. When I see those who have given up and are "waiting for God" I think what a waste of precious time. Although it's hard to get around with you're short of breath, you have to keep hope alive and live your life to the fullest each day and hope that tomorrow a cure will be found. There are still many things you can do - it's all about attitude.
I've never felt I was a victim, but I have gotten angry at the lack of research conducted on COPD and how few new solutions have emerged in the past decade. It's the fourth leading cause of death yet little research money is spent on finding new treatments.
Trapped at home? Get involved online. Join some forums, learn as much as you can about how to improve your breathing. Hate exercising? So do I. But anyone can lean over their kitchen counter and stand while reading the newspaper or a magazine rather than sitting down. This alone will help strengthen your legs.
Go to a store two or three times a week and walk around pushing a shopping cart for 15 minutes (leave your wallet at home or you can go broke).
Hello Jeannine,
Thank you for your comment. You give some excellent suggestions and if our readers take them to heart and make even one change, it's a great start to a better quality of life with COPD.
A personal question.....have we met or was that another person by that same name?
Thanks again, Jeannine! Have a good breathing day!

You are doing a great service for people with COPD. Very informative site.
Hi Jeannine,
Nice to "see" you again. Thanks for your kind words. I'll have to check out your site.
Have a great evening!
