COPD and Worry: What is it?

By Jane M. Martin, BA, LRT, CRT, Health Pro Monday, February 28, 2011
“Worry is interest paid on trouble before it comes due.” - William Ralph Inge   As an adult, you have a lot on your mind. In addition to the usual concerns about issues such as money, the well-being of children (even if they’re grown) and other loved ones, maintaining yo...
How Does Worry Affect my Health?

Hi Jane,

All I can say is, "Attaboy, Girl!"  You are right on.  Am anxious to read the rest of the story.

Am constantly "preaching" to my COPD support group (The Airheads) about the power of positive thinking and the dangers of worrying.  Two words that are not allowed to be said without reproach are, "I can't."  We can try.

If ever you get to The Villages, FL, I would love to have you meet The Airheads.  Better yet, join us on one of our annual cruises that Celeste Belyea arranges for us.  We have a GREAT time.

Thank you for what you do.

Hello Nick,

Thanks for your comment - and your words of wisdom. I think worry is far more pervasive than we know, especially having a big negative effect on people with COPD. We talk about the "worry grip" - and it is exactly what it is.

Funny you should ask...I will be joining Celeste and the Sea Puffers on the upcoming cruise to the Panama Canal scheduled to set sail very soon - on April 4! I'll be bringing my new book about COPD, in fact, I'll be launching it on the cruise. Can't wait! Will anybody from your group be there?

I'd love to meet you and the Airheads sometime. I'll be flying in just before the cruise and flying out immediately following so I won't be around long enough this time around, but feel free to contact me via message here on Health Central or through my website and we'll talk!

Best Wishes for an easy breathing day to you and your group!

Jane.

YOUR GROUP SOUNDS GREAT AND i JUST FOUND OUT ABOUT THE CRUISES.Hope one day to be able to go.

I have been going to a rehab group for many years but when short of breath had panic attacks.3 years ago my daughter passed away from cancer and 3 months later ,my Mother.I was put in touch with Hospice and their bereavement group.

We are lead in "mindfull meditation"My other daughter and my sister were there and they got worried as my oxygen slowed down so much they thought I had quit breathing.

It has been a wonderful way to zone out, calm down when stressed or worried, but also to practice when going to sleep.I was able to practice sleeping flat on my back to have cataract surgery,I hardly have to make my bed as I sleep so peacfully.

I am going back to hospice for more sessions as a client with end stage COPD.

I cannot say how much it has helped me.

Dear Nikpmup,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with mindful meditation! I'm sorry to hear of your losses. That must have been both enormously sad and stressful for you. How wonderful that you sought help - and got it - in this way.

I'll be posting pictures from the cruise on my website after I get back.

Thanks again for telling us how meditation has helped you. It's a lesson we all need to hear. Keep up the good work!

My Best,

Jane.
